New book by web pastor Nils Smith focuses on using social media to move people forward in their relationship with God

Social Media

As the social media advisor for Community Bible Church in San Antonio and web pastor of CBC’s online community church, blogger and author Nils Smith understands that challenge. That’s why he wrote Social Media Guide for Ministry (Group Publishing, March 2013), a no-nonsense, easy-to-comprehend guide to confronting and mastering the new technology. “This is an exciting time for ministry leaders as the world of social media is creating incredible gospel opportunities,” Smith explained. “The challenge comes in understanding how to best utilize these remarkable tools for ministry.”

“So many ministry leaders ignored social media at first because they thought it was only for the younger generation,” he added. “Now they are beginning to recognize that it cannot be ignored and that it actually does provide great ministry opportunities. Their first question is usually, ‘Where do I start?’”

While there is no definitive answer to that question, Smith uses the pages of Social Media Guide for Ministry to both give his readers a better understanding of social media and to present them with practical action steps in getting started. The pages are liberally laced with both real-life examples of ministries using social media effectively and great tips for using the newest technology to reach out to those who might otherwise be missed.

“The demands of ministry can be very draining, not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well,” said Amy Nappa, who oversees adult ministry resources for Group Publishing. “Today there is an urgent need to experience community in ways that cannot be done while maintaining an insulated focus on the traditional method of reaching out. Social Media Guide for Ministry is particularly exciting because it is written in an evasy-to-understand way that breaks through those insulating barriers and can guide churches, ministries, and pastors toward creating that greater community experience.”

“The possibilities really are endless,” Smith said, “and new opportunities to take the gospel to the ends of the earth through the World Wide Web are continually opening. My goal is to encourage and inspire others to use the technological tools that are at our fingertips to proclaim the gospel as never before.”
