Ministry and community leaders change the lives of youth, the poor and the marginalized

Plenary speakers for the much anticipated leadership event included esteemed Christian statesmen Dr.. Tim Keller, senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City; Dr. Ajith Fernando, former national director for Youth for Christ in Sri Lanka; Bob Doll, a consultant and former Chief Equity Specialist at Black Rock in New York City; Dr. Luis Palau, founder of the Luis Palau Association in Portland, Oregon; and Richard Stearns, president of World Vision in Seattle, Washington.  Attendees sensed at the very core of each message a challenge to lay aside ethnicity, personality and style differences to achieve a working alliance that would further the Kingdom of God.

“It is vital for us as Christians to collaborate with one another,” explained Tim Keller.  “We must do it because theologically it’s the right thing to do and because no one person and no single church has all of the gifts.  In order to do the ministry that Christ calls us to do in the world, we need each other.”

Ajith Fernando echoed that theme.  “One of the greatest challenges of today’s mission field is the city.  Work in the city is fraught with discouragement and a need for wisdom.  When people who are having similar experiences get together and share ideas, it can charge their batteries, give them strength and create solidarity.  It also provides practical tips that will help them stay strong and finish the work.”  Fernando continued, “This is why I am so excited about what Movement Day is doing.”

Summing up the importance of cooperation and unity in the Body of Christ, Dr. Pier said, “It takes collaborative leadership to initiate a Gospel Movement.  It also takes a movement of God’s Spirit and God’s people to transform a city and to meet its enormous spiritual, social and humanitarian needs. There is real hope that we can indeed make a difference, given the interest and participation of city leaders in Movement Day.”
